Readorium’s Bryant Magdael’s film to be viewed at Golden Door

The Golden Door International Film Festival is a prestigious event that happens annually in Jersey City New Jersey. The event founder Bill Sorvino was born and raised in Jersey City. The name for the event “The Golden Door” was not chosen lightly. It refers to the poem written by Emma Lazarus. This poem was initially written for a fundraiser auction to raise money for the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty. The poem was forgotten after the auction until after Lazarus died when her friends wanted to memorialize her and the poem. The text was then mounted inside the pedestal

New Colossus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,

With the conquering limbs astride from land to land;

Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand

A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame

Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name

Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand

Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command

The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she

With silent limps. “Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

When Bill Sorvino began The Golden Door International Film Festival, he took the quote to heart. More specifically the final line “I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” and intended for this Festival to be that ‘golden door of opportunity’ for new and indie filmmakers. Just as the Statue of Liberty represents the same ‘golden door of opportunity’ for the world.

One of this year’s student filmmakers to be featured at the Golden Door International Film Festival will be Readorium’s own Bryant Magdael! We are so proud of him and all the work he has done in following his dream of being a world renown filmmaker. May this be the true ‘golden door’ for you and all those who are featured during this year’s festival!
